Workshop in Botanical Illustration Watercolors
This winter I'm offering a workshop in botanical illustration with watercolors on February 4th & 5th. Depending on interest, the workshop might be oriented towards more rudimentary or more in-depth instruction. It will be at my rural home, about 10 miles southwest of Gainesville, Florida. We will begin with a short walk outside demonstrating some of the attributes of plants that are important to illustrate, choosing specimens and other elements of botanical illustration and observation. Previous students have commented that this instruction has dramatically enhanced their enjoyment of nature. Though we'll discuss the conventions of traditional botanical illustration, it's not necessary that your paintings look like one. Drawing will be indoors and attendance is limited to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 people.
On the day before the workshop you can deliver the plant that you want to paint to a location in Gainesville. (You can also select a plant at my house on Saturday, if you like.) When you arrive the next morning your plant will be set up on a table with lights and materials ready to start. I'll have photographed the plant the day before so there will be a printout with close-ups (that you can trace if you want to save drawing time in order to devote more time to watercolor technique). After the weekend you can take the printouts home to use as a reference to finish your painting with the same position, light and shadows as when you started. The workshop will be held Saturday, from 10am-4pm and Sunday, 1pm-5pm with all materials and Saturday's lunch included in the $100 fee.
